3D makeover for construction

posted 21 May 2015 at 16:26:55

These three steel nodes are a perfect example of how 3D printing can improve design and production processes in the construction industry in ways that could significantly reduce costs, cut waste and slash the carbon footprint of the industry. The culmination of research into additive manufacturing by engineering company Arup, the small node (far right) carries the same structural loads and forces as the large node made using traditional methods (far left), but with a weight reduction of 75%. (The central node was an earlier 3D printed iteration). Arup believes that additive manufacturing has huge potential for making efficiencies for any industry using complex, high-quality metal elements.
