Bringing Pompeii back to life

3D printing is useful for preserving our cultural heritage and now the technology is helping to restore a major event in history: the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD in Pompeii, and the death and destruction it wreaked. Over time, archaeologists have preserved the site and made detailed plaster casts of the bodies of the victims, mummified in incredible detail by the volcano’s ash. Now, many of the casts are too fragile to be moved and that’s where 3D printing can make a real contribution. WASP, an Italian company that specialises in 3D printing large structures, is helping to restore and recreate the casts using their Delta 3D printers. The replicas will be exhibited all round the world – a potent testimonial of the terrible event.
