3D printed façade for EU building

To mark the start of the Dutch EU Presidency this month, a new ‘Europe Building’ has been inaugurated in Amsterdam that showcases specially commissioned 3D printed elements. The eye-catching structure, designed by DUS Architects (of the 3D printed Amsterdam Canal House fame), was inspired by the historical sailing ships that were once built in this area.

The building’s exterior wall take the form of three billowing sails that form alcoves, each housing a 3D printed bench.  Made from bio-plastics, the EU-blue coloured benches were made with an extra-large 3D printer that can print elements up to 2x2x3.5m in size, and can be shredded and recycled when the presidency comes to an end.
